Travis, Travis, Travis...

by Todd Melanson • January 8, 2006

Phil Hellmuth said it best: "If there wasn't luck involved, I guess I'd win every hand!" Let me tell you there was no lack of luck in the air or up the ass of the current points leader Travis "Horseshoe" Hicks. This $20 buy in game hosted by Maurel started off in fine fashion with the original 6 players. Marcel lost a good chunk of his chips to Todd and his pocket Kings in the very first hand. His lack of luck and cards continued as he was the first player eliminated after about 2.5 hours.

Next on the chopping block was Jay, he had a little comeback happening but just stopped getting the cards. After Jay, the next to fall was Dave. It was weird but all the bad cards seemed to always be dealt to Dave, Marcel and Jay's side of the table.

After getting tons of bad hole cards, the blinds are gonna get cha, and that's what happened to Dave. He fell victim to bad cards and the blinds. That leaves Maurel, Todd and Travis. Action continues for a bit and the next victim is Maurel. I'm not sure what the cards were but Todd went all in and Maurel called... and lost.

So that leaves us at heads up between Todd and Travis. At this point Todd has approx 6500 in chips and Travis has 2500 in chips. It looks as though a bounty may be collected tonight!

Now at this point we take a 5 minute break. This is the most critical point of the tournament as Travis heads to the washroom to adjust the horseshoe that's up his ass. Because after that it seems like the guy can't lose. Action goes on for a bit and Travis is down in chips. Travis gets 9 10 Todd has J 9. Travis raises and Todd calls. The flop comes J49. Travis goes all in and Todd quickly calls with his 2 pairs. The turn comes a 10. So no big deal right? Todd has J's and 9's and Travis has 9's and 10's. At this point Todd's odds are like 98% to win right. If you can fucking believe it, Travis hits ANOTHER 10 on the river and takes it down with a boat!!

After Travis doubled up he was basically going all in with every hand he was dealt. Apparently he was getting great cards while Todd's best cards were 52 off suit!! So this goes on for a bit and we are pretty close to even in chips. Todd gets a J 10 and Travis gets A4. Travis goes all in and Todd calls. The flop comes 999. As usual things are looking really great for Travis with his A kicker at this point. I of course start praying for a J to hit and to make it interesting. The turn comes 9. Can you FUCKING believe it!!! Quad nines on the board and Travis has the fucking ace kicker!!!! Now sure, we could split the pot with an A on the river, but don't forget about horseshoe Hicks!! The river was a 3. Not only did Travis take the pot down, win the tournament, get 24 points for 1st place but he also gets the 5 bonus points for the quad 9's!!!! What the FUCK!!

Now on the the $5 game...

This is going to be short and sweet because re-living the bull shit from last night is putting me on tilt again!!

All I know is Todd was out first due to massive tilt and going all in with A8 against AA's of Maurel...

Marcel was out next...
Then Jay...
Then Dave...

Then it's heads up between the king of horseshoes and the whiskey man.... I left before the end of the game but all I know is that Travis flopped a fucking nut straight and somehow got Maurel to go all in and fucking won again. The legend of the horseshoe lives on for another week.

In closing.... Travis and his lucky streak continue!!!

There is one certainty about luck though ... It ALWAYS changes... Enjoy it while it lasts Travis!!!

<RANT> In my head - last night never happened. I HAVE to believe that this kind of digusting luck doesn't exist in our world.

I mean, I don't want to take anything away from Travis' playing, but when you flop the nut straight like 3 times in one night, and catch your only out: a 0.5% runner runner 10s to make a boat, it just makes me physically ill.

Can anybody comprehend that? Something like poker is making me PHYSICALLY sick. I'm just SICK about it!

... and just to add my little piece of bad luck - my best hole cards all night (in the $20 game), was AQ, and I did NOT get one pocket pair. Even Marcel, who was out first, got back-to-back pocket Aces. In the $5 game, my best hand was an AK, with no pocket pairs! Granted, I got it 4 times... but every time, I went all in - and everybody folded. Out of curiousity, we played it to the river, and I only would have won once! Actually... I got one caller... Jay... K8... had him SO dominated. I was a 3:1 favorite, 75%/25%... and he hit an 8 on the turn. Again... I'm just SICK about it. </RANT>

Anyhow, it was still poker, and it was still a good night, with good company. Thanks for being an awesome host, as always, Maurel!

You know what's worse than not getting ANY cards all night? Getting a strong hand like, let's say, a full house, only to be pummeled by something like a STRAIGHT FLUSH! a STRAIGHT FLUSH!!!!!!!!! GO TO HELL BAWLSEY!

One thing worst than having a strong hand and being beat with a strong hand; is having a strong hand, and then getting outdrawn with a ½% chance of hitting it.

I wasn't even in the hand, and I was on tilt!!
