Travis Wins Again!

by Dave Robichaud • January 1, 2006

Let me just start by saying, every time we play a $20.00 Buy-In game, we always plan on having a quick $5.00 Buy-In game after said first game. This time, for the $5.00 game, we were going to change it up, and everybody was looking forward to play an Omaha tournament. FAT CHANCE. After 7 hours and 40 minutes, nobody was going to play another game!

So, needless to say, this was yet another marathon game! The no-limit Hold'em game of 9 players started at a little past 19:00, and finished at about 3:00.

Check out the final standings here!

So, the game started out like any other game... probably even a little quicker than most. After a few hours, we were already 7-handed, with Chris and Jay going out, in respective order.

People who were down to their last few chips, seemed to double/triple up like 3 times and be right back in the thick of things.

But, inevitably, the blinds grew large, and the field grew thin. Maurel and Darren were the next two out, and we were still 5-handed when the blinds were 200-400. With a beginning chip stack of 1500, the average stack at that point would be 2700, which means a player is committing 15% of their stack, just in blinds!

With this knowledge, people were playing a little tighter in non-blind positions, but very aggressive to protect their blinds.

It's a bit of a blur once 5-handed, since it was getting pretty late, and the gin and tonic was going down pretty good... but Marcel suffered a few huge hits, and was the next one out. Soon thereafter, Todd was the next victim.

3 handed... Mike, Travis, and Dave. Dave is the obvious short stack with about 2000, followed by Mike, and Travis has command of the table.

Dave was very quickly blinded out and had to push his remaining stack when he was put all-in by Mike. A7 offsuit, against Mike's pocket 8s. The board didn't help Dave, so Mike takes it down.

Heads-up: stacks are pretty close to even... and both players are playing VERY tight. However, an invariable decision when you're heads-up and it's 3:00 in the morning, everybody knew an All-In had to come.

When it did, Travis had Mike covered... so if Travis won the hand, he would take the match, for the 2nd time in a row.

Mike has AQ os and Travis has K5 suited. Mike is a 60% favorite, going to the flop. Nobody actually remembers what the board showed, but Travis ended up with a set of Ks, giving him the hand and the game!

So, no bounty points for anybody and the target on Travis' head is getting MUCH bigger!

Happy New Year's everybody! Here's looking forward to a full year of poker! May 2006 be filled with monster cards and no bad beats!
