Mairaker

by Chris Boulay • August 29, 2006

Friday night's game was an interesting one for me. I was winning or splitting hands that I shouldn't have and losing ones that I was a favorite to win. The two most memorable ones were when I pushed allin with two pair 10's and 3's when the flop was KT3. Ron called with pocket 10's... trip tens... not very good for me. At this point I need running 3's to win or running K's to split. Turn is a K and so is the river. Sorry about that Ron. I was at 1% to get out of that hand alive. The other hand was against Carole, I pushed preflop with pocket 6's and she called with pocket Q's. Again, disastrous for me. I guess the poker gods were smiling on me, I got a 6 (I believe on the flop but can't really remember) and my trips held up.

OHHHHHHHH we also put out a new nickname for one of the players. Julie "Mairaker" Pham, let me paint a little scenario. As most of you know, I like to bluff, alot... like 80% of the time... You can pretty much guarantee that if I'm in the hand, I'm on a stone cold bluff, or I have the nuts. So, I get dealt T5os, a hand that I'm starting to like to play since you're almost guaranteed to hit OR flop three to a straight or better. Flop hits 984. In my ususal fashion, I bet. Mairaker calls. Turn is another 4. At this point I go all in, I have a pretty good read on Julie and put her on 2 over cards or maybe middle pair, either way she can't possibly call as this is for her tournament life. For some wildly unknown reason, she decides to call... with middle pair...and ace kicker. So here comes the nickname "Mairaker" (middle pair ace kicker). How can you possibly risk your tournament life on a mairaker? Either way it turned out to be a good call since I had nothing. What I don't get is, if people ALWAYS put me on garbage cards, how can you NOT put me on a 4 in this situation? But anyway, I will make this promise, Mairaker, at the big pot game, I WILL TAKE ALL OF YOUR CHIPS. I can't wait, it's gonna be soooooo awesome.

Oh, I also heard that flopping the nut flush and hearing Marcel go allin is a lot of fun too. Now I'm usually not one to slow play but I flopped an ADiamonds high flush but also had a gut shot straight flush draw so I wanted to see if I could hit it and get some bonus points. Maybe if I hadn't slow played Marcel wouldn't of gone allin. Oh well it was pretty sweet.

Well Chris you said it, you bluff 80%. I figure since you went all in and the flop was 9 high that you were bluffing and my pair of eights had you beat. At the most I though you had a pair of fours. You were also so eager for me to call which led me to believe you wanted me to fold. It's never a bad call when you win a hand.
It seemed that I couldn't loose and just getting the cards so I didn't want to anger the poker gods by folding. Smile
I'm gonna hold you to that big pot game promise too!

I was a little too confident when I called Dave's All In with my king high flush. He had pocket fours and the turn was a 4 and then river was a 4. I would of never put him on quads!

Pardon my lol Mairaker but "At the most I thought you had a pair of fours"? Well seeing as what there was a pair of fours on the board that would be a great read by you. And FYI you can take down a pot and it still be a horrible call. Let's use this as an example... Board shows KT3- I have T3, let's say Ron is in the hand (hypothermically speaking of course) he shows me pocket 10's and say "allin!" Now let's say I were to call here and catch running K's for a split... IT WOULDN'T BE A GOOD CALL! even tho I would split the pot and take all your chips in the process IT WOULD STILL BE A STUPID CALL!
kthxby

Friday's game was definitely a good time! Thanks to Ron and Angela for being great hosts and laying out an awesome spread, as always.

A few comments about the game:

When we were 4-handed, Todd being the short stack - Ron, Julie, and I being relatively even in chips, it was amazing to see Ron and Julie commit all of their chips when Todd could have been blinded out, literally in 2 or 3 orbits.

Here's how it played out... once 4-handed, it took exactly 5 hands to finish the game:

  1. I had pocket 4s. Ron folds under the gun, Julie calls on the button, I'm small blind and simply complete the blind, Todd checks. The flop comes KJx with 2 Diamondss. Check all around.

The turn comes a 4. I'm feeling pretty good about that. I bet the minimum... I believe the blinds were at 100/200. Todd and Julie both call. The river... 4Diamonds! Giving me quads - and the nuts. I decide to bet it - the minimum again. I know it's probably not the wisest decision, since if Todd and Julie both fold, I'm out 5 points for quads... but, I'm out to win this match, not for the bonus points.

Todd calls, Julie pushes... I push, Todd folds.

So that was the end of Julie.2

  2. The very next hand, I look down at pocket Ks. I raise the minimum on the button, Todd folds, and Ron pushes! I'm more than happy to make that call, and Ron flips over KQ. The board came nothing, and Ron was out.

  3. Three hands for Todd. I can't remember the first hand... second hand I push with AQ... OOPS! Todd had bullets, so I double him up. Third hand, I push with A9, he calls with A5. I believe I took the hand down with trip 9s.

So, very quick and surprising ending! Aahhh... good times though. Did I mention I love poker?

So... to add on to Chris and Julie's comments:
Julie - I actually think when Chris said he bluffs 80% of the time, he was being sarcastic. I feel as though I have a mouthful of pennies there was so much sarcasm there.

... and let it be known that there ARE horrible calls even if you take down a pot. Chris' example was good, but how about this:
You're 4 to a flush on the turn. You've got 9 outs. That's a 19ish% to hit your flush and take down the pot. Maybe you call, and maybe you get lucky and hit. You feel good, give yourself a pat on the back because you made a great call and got paid off.

WRONG!

Let's say you do get lucky and hit. Statistically speaking, the next 4 times you make that EXACT same call, you miss. So, how can the EXACT same call be good one time and bad an other?

Oh Can someone tell Marcel to sign up for the big pot? and make me a sammich!
Julie Pham 08/31/2006 18:37

Ok Chris I'm not sure what you mean by there was a pair 4's on the board. I was just refering to the flop of 984. I believe that is only one 4. You can't really expect to win all in with a T5. Not that I was overly confident with my 8's but I wouldn't of called if it were anyone else. I tend to call you when you bluff. I'm not one for statistics, but feel that I got a pretty good read on you. Let's say you bluff 79.9% of the time...Smile

"The problem with making bets that look like they want to get called is that they usually do."

Well, what I mean by that is that there was a pair of 4's on the board. That's my argument in its entirety actually. That and I'm really good at Starcraft too.
